Green Tea Extract

October 16, 2020

What is green tea?

Green tea extract is derived from the leaves and buds of the camellia sinensis plant. It contains a major polyphenolic compound called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is highly beneficial for the skin due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Benefits of green tea

1. Reduces puffiness

The caffeine present in green tea helps to shrink the blood vessels, thus reducing puffiness and swelling in the face. The anti-inflammatory properties of ECGC also work to reduce redness and soothe the skin.

2. Defends against environmental damage

The antioxidant properties of the EGCG present in green tea helps to defend against UV-induced damage, counter the effects of pollution and repair the DNA in skin cells. Antioxidants also work to reduce inflammation and target the free radicals that accelerate skin ageing.

3. Fights breakouts

EGCG is anti-androgenic and reduces lipid levels, which can help to regulate sebum production. The polyphenols in green tea target acne-causing bacteria to help prevent future breakouts.

Is green tea suitable for my skin type?

Green tea is suitable for all skin types. As EGCG helps protect the skin from free radicals and increases skin hydration, green tea is particularly beneficial for mature or dry skin. Its ability to regulate sebum production and soothe the skin can greatly improve oily or combination skin that’s prone to breakouts.

Can green tea be used with other products?

Green tea can be safely combined with other products. When used in combination with another antioxidant, such as vitamin C, it enhances the efficacy of both ingredients in fighting against free radicals and protecting the skin from external environmental aggressors.

How often should I use green tea?

Green tea can be used as needed up to twice a day.
