We use the least packaging necessary to protect and deliver your order. We don't use polystyrene filler or airbags - instead we use biodegradable corn chips. Our cardboard boxes are made from recycled board and we try not to split deliveries so that we use the minimum carbon possible.
We are transitioning to be free of single-use plastic and expect to be free of this early 2020. Most of our products are now available in either glass jars or aluminium tubes - two materials that have the best recycling rates within the UK according to DEFRA 2017 figures. At the moment we use a small amount of plastic for a tube closure - however this is fully recyclable. Detailed packaging information can be found on the "DATA" link of each product.
For those worried about microbial contamination in jars - all facetheory products are challenged tested. This means they are inoculated with bacteria in a secondary lab and then tested to make sure that the preservative in the product kills any contamination. As long as you take a little care with using the product we believe that the ecological benefits of an easy to recycle jar outweigh the convenience of plastic.
Plastic does have benefits as a material (durability, weight) however we believe there are very few ecologically sound plastic choices at the moment that can be widely recycled within the UK.
Some of our ingredients do contain palm oil however our sourcing is now 100% RPSO.
Although there's no doubt palm oil has contributed to deforestation - now the plantations are in existence it does have significant benefits over other forms of monoculture (a significantly higher yield). This blog article from the WWF explains it far better than we can here. .
We proudly manufacture in Sheffield in the United Kingdom and where possible we source our ingredients and components from UK suppliers.
