How to Get Rid of Spots & Breakouts Without Drying Out Your Skin

The old approach to acne-prone skin was aggressive: dry it out, strip it back, fight it at all costs. It doesn't work. Here's what does.

If you've ever used a product that cleared your breakouts but left your skin flaky, tight, and irritated, only to break out again when you stopped - you've experienced the cycle first-hand. Blemish treatments that compromise your barrier don't solve the problem. They trade one issue for another.

The better approach targets the root causes of breakouts while keeping your skin barrier intact. Your skin clears up. And it stays clear.

Why Spots Happen (The Short Version)

Acne and breakouts generally come down to a few things working against each other:

Excess sebum - overactive oil glands produce more than the skin can use, creating the conditions for congestion.

Dead skin cell buildup - when dead cells aren't shed effectively, they mix with sebum and block pores.

Bacteria - thrives in blocked pores and drives the inflammation that turns a clogged pore into a red, painful spot.

Inflammation - the immune response to all of the above, which causes swelling, redness, and post-breakout marks.

Address these causes with targeted actives, and you stop the cycle. Dry out your skin indiscriminately, and you compromise the barrier - triggering more sebum production and more breakouts.

The Ingredients That Break the Cycle

Salicylic Acid (BHA): An oil-soluble acid that can penetrate inside the pore, where AHAs can't reach. Dissolves the sebum and dead cell buildup that causes congestion. The foundation of most effective blemish routines.

Niacinamide: Regulates sebum production, reduces redness and inflammation, and inhibits the post-breakout pigmentation that leaves marks behind. Exceptionally well-tolerated.

Zinc PCA: Paired with niacinamide, zinc helps control oil production and has mild antimicrobial properties. A well-documented combination for acne-prone skin.

Azelaic Acid: Targets bacteria, reduces inflammation, and addresses the pigmentation left after breakouts clear. Strong safety record and suitable for most skin types.

Lactic Acid (AHA): Gently exfoliates the skin's surface, preventing the dead cell buildup that leads to blocked pores. Less aggressive than glycolic acid - a better choice for breakout-prone skin that's also sensitive.

What to Avoid

Over-exfoliating. If you're using multiple acid products daily, you're likely doing more harm than good. Acids are powerful; they need recovery time. For most skin types, 1–2 exfoliating steps per day is plenty.

Skipping moisturiser. Moisture-deprived skin produces more oil. This is well-established. Moisturise with a non-comedogenic formula and your skin will thank you.

Skipping SPF. Post-breakout marks (PIH) are dramatically worsened by UV exposure. SPF isn't optional when you're dealing with hyperpigmentation.

Picking. Every time skin is picked, the inflammation spreads - creating more marks and, frequently, more breakouts.

The Routine

Cleanse

The first line of defence for breakout-prone skin. ClariCleanse AHA & BHA Exfoliating Cleanser does the work in the wash: salicylic acid works into the pore to clear congestion, while lactic acid resurfaces and glycerin maintains hydration. Use twice daily with 30–60 seconds of contact time.

Tone (Optional, But Worth It)

Porebright Niacinamide Refining Toner is designed to address multiple skin concerns in a single step skin, making it a must-have in your daily routine. Formulated with 5% niacinamide, ceramide complex, and vitamin C, it refines pores, boosts skin’s elasticity, evens tone, and brightens dullness for a clear, luminious complexion.

If you're dealing with widespread congestion, swapping in Blemicalm BHA 2% Clarifying Toner a few evenings a week might be helpful for you.

Treatment Serums - Target Active Breakouts

Blemicalm Azelaic Acid 10% Clarifying Serum is the spot-targeting step. Formulated with 10% Azelaic Acid  and Colloidal Oatmeal, this is our gentler entry point for azelaic acid - and the better starting place for reactive or sensitive skin, or anyone new to the ingredient. The same core formula as the 15%, at a concentration that's meaningfully effective while being less likely to cause the mild tingling that higher doses can produce on first introduction. Colloidal oatmeal, aloe vera, and green tea extract support and soothe alongside the azelaic acid, making this a genuinely comfortable daily treatment for blemishes, redness, and uneven tone.

Regulate Oil and Prevent New Breakouts

Porebright Niacinamide 10 % Refining Serum is the maintenance step that keeps skin clear between active breakouts. Formulated with a powerhouse blend of multiactive niacinamide, skin clearing salicylic acid and skin soothing azelaic acid, this multi-benefit serum helps reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, keep pores clear and skin tone looking brighter and more even.

Moisturise

Supergel Oil-Free Moisturiser has a lightweight texture but delivers heavyweight results. Supergel’s oil-free, jelly texture is designed for oily, combination, and breakout-prone skin - hydrating deeply without clogging pores or leaving behind excess shine.
Salicylic acid and niacinamide work together to clear and refine skin: unclogging pores, smoothing texture, and visibly reducing blemishes. Hyaluronic acid brings in water-based moisture that leaves your skin feeling comfortable and fresh, never greasy.

Don't skip this step. Especially on the days your skin feels oiliest.

SPF

Every morning, without exception. Glow-C Daily Moisturiser SPF30 protects both your skin and any post-breakout marks from UV exposure that would deepen and prolong them. Lightweight enough that it won't clog pores.

 Weekly Reset: Clay Mask

Once or twice a week, we recommend ClariClay AHA Face Mask. Unlike traditional clay masks that dry hard and are a hassle to remove, our formula features a smooth, creamy texture that draws out impurities without the discomfort of tight, dry skin.

For Hormonal Breakouts

Hormonal acne - typically around the chin, jaw, and lower cheeks follows a pattern: it arrives predictably, tends to be deep and cystic rather than surface-level, and doesn't always respond to standard spot treatments the same way.

The most effective approach: focus on prevention between flare-ups. Porebright Niacinamide 10 % Refining Serum used consistently helps regulate the sebum production that feeds hormonal breakouts and Blemicalm Azelaic Acid 10% Clarifying Serum can reduce severity significantly.

For persistent hormonal acne, a dermatologist conversation is worthwhile alongside your skincare routine.
