Do You Really Need a Toner? (And If So, Which One?)

Toners have had a complicated past. For a long time they were synonymous with alcohol-soaked cotton pads, that unmistakable sting, and the vague sense that you were doing something important to your skin. You probably weren't.

The old-school toner earned its reputation by stripping away oil and "balancing pH", solving problems that modern cleansers largely don't create in the first place. No wonder so many people skipped the step entirely and never looked back.

But here's the thing: the category has changed. Completely.

The best toners today aren't about stripping - they're about adding. They deliver concentrated actives to freshly cleansed skin, prime it to absorb what comes next, and genuinely address specific concerns in a lightweight, fast-absorbing step. Done well, a toner isn't filler. It's a bolt-on that makes your whole routine work harder.

The question isn't really "do I need a toner?" It's "is there a toner that fills a genuine gap in my routine?"

Let's work through it.

What a Modern Toner Actually Does

Toners sit between cleansing and serum application - and that positioning is the point. Freshly cleansed skin is at its most receptive. A well-formulated toner at this stage can:

  • Deliver a meaningful dose of active ingredients directly to clean skin before anything else is layered on top.

  • Provide an additional layer of exfoliation, hydration, or soothing - depending on what your skin needs.

  • Create the ideal surface for serums and moisturisers to absorb more effectively.

  • Address specific skin concerns (congestion, dullness, dehydration, sensitivity) with targeted ingredients.

None of this requires alcohol. All of the Facetheory toners are alcohol-free and unfragranced - because a toner that strips or sensitises defeats its own purpose.

When You Might Not Need One

A toner is optional. That's worth saying clearly. If your current routine is doing everything your skin needs - if your cleanser, serums, and moisturiser between them are addressing your concerns and your skin is balanced and happy, a toner may not add meaningful value.

Where toners earn their place is when there's a gap. A concern your current routine isn't fully covering. A step where an additional layer of a specific ingredient would improve your results. Or simply a preference for the ritual and feel of a well-formulated toner in the sequence.

The Facetheory Toner Range: Which One Is for You?

There are five toners in the range, each built around a different skin need. No two do the same job. Here's what each one is designed to do and who it's designed for.

5% Niacinamide | Ceramide Complex | Vitamin C

The everyday balancing toner (and a major team favourite at Facetheory HQ!) and a great all rounder. Formulated with 5% niacinamide alongside a ceramide complex and stabilised vitamin C, it works to minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, balance oil production, promote elasticity, and support a more even complexion. The ceramide complex quietly builds barrier function in the background, while vitamin C helps boost antioxidant protection and provide a gentle brightening effect with every use.

Who it's for: All skin types. Anyone dealing with uneven tone or dullness who wants niacinamide working as early in the routine as possible. A really great multi-tasking toner that does a lot in one step.

When to use: Morning and evening, after cleansing. Apply with a cotton pad or press directly into skin with clean hands.

2% Salicylic Acid | Microbiome-Balancing Complex

The pore-clearing toner for breakout-prone skin. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which means it can penetrate inside the pore rather than working only at the skin's surface, dissolving the sebum and dead cell buildup that leads to blackheads, whiteheads, and congestion. The microbiome-balancing complex works alongside it to maintain equilibrium, so skin stays clear without becoming disrupted.

This is not a stripping toner - it's a targeted exfoliant in toner form, designed for daily use by skin that needs consistent, gentle pore management.

Who it's for: Oily, acne-prone, and congested skin. Skin dealing with persistent blackheads or breakouts that need consistent pore-clearing support. Also effective on holiday or in hot climates when pores are more prone to congestion from sweat and sunscreen.

When to use: Evening after cleansing (or morning and evening for persistent congestion). Follow with serums and moisturiser.

A note on layering: Be mindful of combining this toner with other exfoliating products in the same routine. Salicylic acid is active and effective - you don't need to layer multiple exfoliants on top of it or you risk overwhelming your skin and disrupting your skin barrier through over exfoliation.

Colloidal Oatmeal | Liquorice Extract | Vitamin C | Aloe Vera

The sensitive skin toner. Colloidal oatmeal is one of the most clinically supported soothing ingredients available - high in beta glucan, it calms irritation, supports barrier function, and is exceptionally gentle even on reactive skin. Liquorice root extract addresses redness and uneven tone. Aloe vera, panthenol round out a formula designed to calm, hydrate, and gently brighten.

This is the antithesis of the old harsh toner. It leaves skin feeling genuinely calm and comfortable, and creates the ideal settled, soothed base for the rest of the routine.

Who it's for: Sensitive, reactive, or redness-prone skin. Those who experience post-cleanse tightness or discomfort and want that rebalanced before applying serums. Also ideal as a calming reset after any flare-up. This product contains Vitamin C so be aware if this ingredient doesn’t suit your skin, this product might not be for you.

When to use: Morning and evening after cleansing. Can also be used any time skin needs a gentle soothing layer - before applying actives, or after exposure to anything that's triggered reactivity.

8% Glycolic Acid | 1% Salicylic Acid | Lactic Acid | Camomile | Aloe Vera

The exfoliating glow toner. This is the most active toner in the range - a triple-acid formula combining glycolic acid (AHA), salicylic acid (BHA), and lactic acid (AHA) to accelerate cell turnover, resurface skin texture, reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, and reveal a visibly smoother, more luminous complexion.

Glycolic acid, at 8%, is the primary exfoliant, dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells to encourage faster renewal. Salicylic acid works inside the pore for additional clarity. Lactic acid provides a gentler secondary AHA resurfacing effect. Camomile and aloe vera provide calming balance to the formula.

Who it's for: All skin types (except sensitive). Anyone dealing with dullness, uneven texture, enlarged pores, or early signs of ageing. Those who want the benefits of regular exfoliation in a simple, daily toner format. Skin that tolerates acids well and is looking for visible resurfacing results.

When to use: Evening after cleansing - glycolic acid increases photosensitivity, so evening application is recommended. Use it daily or as needed. Do not combine with other exfoliating actives in the same routine. Always use Glow-C Daily Moisturiser SPF30 the following morning.

Not recommended for: Sensitive or reactive skin, active rosacea, or those new to acids. If you're new to acid exfoliation, start with the Porebright Niacinamide Refining Toner and introduce the Glow-C Deep Resurfacing Toner gradually once your skin is accustomed to regular active use.

Niacinamide | Cactus Extract | Prickly Pear | Amino Acids

The hydration and barrier-boosting mist. Cactus and prickly pear extracts are naturally rich in electrolytes that replenish and protect skin's moisture balance. Niacinamide adds pore-refining and skin-tone-evening benefits, while amino acids support the skin's natural plumping mechanisms.

What makes Replenamist different is its versatility. It works beautifully as a standard pre-serum toner, but it's also uniquely useful beyond the routine - misted throughout the day for a hydration top-up, spritzed before applying hyaluronic acid serum to provide the ambient moisture HA needs to work effectively, or refreshed over makeup for a midday skin reset.

Who it's for: Everyone! Dehydrated or dull skin that needs a moisture boost at every stage of the routine. Any skin type that wants a multipurpose mist that can be used in-routine and throughout the day.

When to use: After cleansing, before serums. Can also be used anytime during the day for top-up hydration, to refresh makeup, or to prep skin before hyaluronic acid application. Hold the bottle away from the face, close your eyes, and mist gently over face and neck.

How to Choose: A Simple Guide

Your skin concern

The toner to reach for

Uneven tone, lacking glow

Breakouts, blackheads, persistent congestion

Sensitive, reactive, or redness-prone skin

Dullness, uneven texture, want visible resurfacing

Dehydration, all-day hydration top-ups, HA prep

Can You Use More Than One?

Yes - but thoughtfully. Some pairings work well depending on your routine and skin needs:

Porebright Niacinamide Refining Toner + Replenamist - A good combination for skin that wants both niacinamide balancing and hydration, used morning and evening respectively, or on alternating days.

HydraOat Calming Toner + Replenamist — The sensitive skin pairing. HydraOat as the post-cleanse step; Replenamist as an ongoing hydration tool throughout the day.

What to avoid: Using the Glow-C Deep Resurfacing Toner and the Blemicalm BHA Toner in the same routine. Both are active exfoliants - combining them increases irritation risk without delivering better results. Choose the one that addresses your primary concern, and let it do its job.

Where a Toner Fits in Your Routine

Toners belong after cleansing and before serums. Applied to clean, freshly cleansed skin — before any serums or moisturisers are layered on top — they work at their most effective.

The sequence:

1. Cleanse

2. Tone

3. Serum(s)

4. Moisturiser

5. SPF (morning)

Application is simple: apply with a cotton pad or press directly into skin with clean hands. No need to rinse.

The Honest Answer

Do you need a toner? Not if your routine is already working well and covering every concern your skin has. But if there's a gap - a concern that's not quite being addressed, or a step where an additional targeted ingredient would strengthen your results, a well-formulated toner fills it better than almost anything else.

The era of stinging, stripping, alcohol-heavy toners is over. These are products that actually work, built around ingredients your skin genuinely benefits from. If one of the five above is solving a problem your current routine hasn't, it belongs in your routine.

If none of them are, it probably doesn't. And that's completely fine too. We’re not here to recommend you something you don’t need or that’s not right for you.
