Get healthy glowing skin all year round

Summer came and went in the blink of an eye. While you might still be longing for those warm days at the beach, it’s time to move forward and get into an autumnal mood. Starting with –you guessed it– adapting your skincare routine from summer to autumn.

Think of it as swapping sandals and flowy shirts for waterproof boots and cosy jumpers. Your skin will have different needs during this new season.

Strengthen your skin barrier

The drop in temperature and dry environment will show their effects on your skin. You may notice more dryness, a tighter feel and even flakiness. Your cheeks may show more redness, and your lips may crack (ouch!).

Colder climate affects the outer layer of your skin and weakens the skin barrier function. When your skin barrier is weak, your skin is more vulnerable to irritation and the uncomfortable effects mentioned above.

Of course, you want to prevent this from happening as much as possible. Strengthening your skin barrier is key to keeping your skin healthy during the cold seasons coming up. The good news is that this is as easy as adding extra ingredients that will protect and reinforce your skin, like oils, ceramides and amino acids.

Start with your cleanser

A cleanser’s main duty is to remove impurities and excess oil. However, this time of the year, you want those oils more than ever. Continue cleansing your skin, but don’t overdo it. Try a gentler cleanser that will keep those oils your skin needs.

Follow with a richer moisturiser

A lightweight oil-free moisturiser might be perfect for those hot days. In autumn, you may need something richer in texture to replenish your skin oils and protect your skin barrier. We love our Aventhra Moisturiser M2 for this.

Add some oils

On occasions, a heavy-duty moisturiser and gentle cleanser may not be enough to keep your skin nourished. Face oils provide instant moisture and comfort while soothing your skin. Try replacing your night cream with a face oil. Add a few drops to your skin in the evening after cleansing and toning, and feel the difference.

Slough away dead skin

Not everything has to be grey this time of the year! Autumn is the perfect time to renew your skin for a fresh glow.

Many active ingredients like glycolic acid, lactic acid and retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. This makes the shorter autumn days with little sun ideal for exfoliating treatments like scrubs and masks.

Regular exfoliation has many benefits

  1. Helps fade hyperpigmentation caused by excess sun exposure during the summer
  2. Removes dead skin cells for a softer, smoother and brighter complexion
  3. Increases the absorption of your richer moisturisers and oils, so they don’t sit on the surface

Exfoliate once or twice a week (depending on your skin type) for the best results. Don’t overdo it, excessive exfoliation can damage your skin barrier, and well… you already know why that’s not a good thing.

TIP: Don’t forget about your lips! When they start flaking, no amount of lip care product will be able to heal your poor lips if you don’t remove the dead skin first. Try a lip scrub in your night-time routine before applying your favourite lip balm.

Never stop protecting your skin

Sunny days may be a distant memory, but that’s no excuse to forget about SPF. Even though it might not feel like you need it, UVA rays are still able to go through the cloud cover and reach your skin.

This is especially important if you’re going to exfoliate more frequently. The Amil-C Whip M5 SPF 30 is a beautiful blend of moisturiser and SPF that can give you the nourishment and protection you need this time of the year.
